Looking at the timeless bridge
That’s stood at our capital’s heart
Where freedom remains for us to defend
From those wanting to tear us apart

The carnage of the sad day before
Must seem surreal to those passing by
But all we can do is let life carry on
So the face of such hatred's denied
LONDON TERRORIST ATTACK - 22nd March 2017

Yesterday was a terrible day for London and, just like other cities before in recent times, it was a shock to the system and to the capital's inhabitants and visitors - and a sharp and sad reminder that terrorism and the threat to our western way of life is still at large …

The title of this poem I've composed is Composed Upon Westminster Bridge and it is of course borrowed from the famous early 19th century poem by William Wordsworth. My poem was not of course composed there (I actually live some 30 miles away from London) but it seemed an apt title in view of where yesterday’s sad events took place.

For those unfamiliar with Wordsworth’s lovely poem, I have printed it below; although of course it seems a million years away from what has actually happened there now:

*Composed Upon Westminster Bridge

"Earth has not anything to show more fair:
Dull would he be of soul who could pass by
A sight so touching in its majesty:
This City now doth, like a garment, wear
The beauty of the morning; silent, bare,
Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie
Open unto the fields, and to the sky;
All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.
Never did sun more beautifully steep
In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill;
Ne’er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!
The river glideth at his own sweet will:
Dear God! the very houses seem asleep;
And all that mighty heart is lying still!"

It's well written but very dismissive. If a bus was hurtling towards you, you would not think: "I'm not going to move, infact, I'm going to carry on walking towards this bus."
